There are 235,566 Registered Nurses licensed and living in California as of December, 1999. In 1996, there were approximately 2,558,874 individuals licensed as RNs in the United States.

In 1998 there were a total of 5,059 graduates of registered nursing programs in California. Of those graduates, approximately two-thirds were from associate degree programs, and one-third from baccalaureate programs.

Approximately 70% of employed RNs in California are working full-time. Only 30% of employed RNs are working part-time or part year. In 1996, in the US, 71% of employed RNs were employed full-time.

The average income from nursing has grown steadily in recent years, rising 43% between 1990 and 1997. In 1997 the average income from nursing was $45,073. The average salary of all RNs working in the US in 1996 was $42,071.
