There are 235,566 Registered Nurses licensed and living in California
as of December, 1999. In 1996, there were approximately 2,558,874 individuals
licensed as RNs in the United States.

Approximately 7% of California RNs are males, and 93% are female. In 1996
approximately 5% of all RNs in the US were male.

Approximately 55% of RNs in California completed their nursing education
in a California school.
7. 1998 Nursing Graduates, by Educational Segment
In 1998 there were a total of 5,059 graduates of registered nursing programs
in California. Of those graduates, approximately two-thirds were from
associate degree programs, and one-third from baccalaureate programs.

Only 30% of employed RNs are working part-time or part year. In 1996,
in the US, 71% of employed RNs were employed full-time.

The average income from nursing has grown steadily in recent years, rising
43% between 1990 and 1997. In 1997 the average income from nursing was
$45,073. The average salary of all RNs working in the US in 1996 was $42,071.
