Executive coaching is an integral component of leadership development. Coaching provides an opportunity for health care leaders to receive individualized, ongoing support in their development. A coach partners with a client to identify leadership goals and develop a structured plan to work toward those goals. Throughout the program, the coach and client communicate at regular intervals to track progress toward the goals, address challenges and integrate learning.
Executive coaching often begins with online assessments to help understand the needs of the client. Depending on the client’s goals, the coach may recommend one or more of the following online assessments.
- An intake survey in which the client answers questions about her/himself.
- A 360 degree assessment which gathers direct feedback from the client’s boss, peers and direct reports about leadership strengths and areas of development.
- The Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator (MBTI), the most widely-used personality type indicator, describes the client’s personality style.
- The FIRO-B (Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior) provides information about how the client interacts with others and wants others to interact with her/him.
- The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument provides information about the client's conflict style.

They understand the particular challenges leaders face in the current health care environment. In choosing a coach, we recommend the following:
- Consider what you want from coaching.
- Look for a coach who will provide you with the level of support and structure that will help you reach your goals. Be honest with yourself about what helps you develop.
- Ask the coach questions about her/his approach to help you determine the best match for you. You may want to talk to more than one coach before you choose a coach.
