The Network program has presented a series of cultural competency workshops and trainings. The list below provides a brief description of the trainings we have held in the past. For more information about future trainings, please contact Lisa Leiva at: lisao@itsa.ucsf.edu.

Addressing Health Disparities: Initiating Organizational Change In July 2003, The Network sponsored a workshop entitled, "Addressing Health Disparities: Initiating Organizational Change." This workshop addressed the expressed need of cultural competency educators and health systems managers to learn techniques for integrating cultural competency into organizational contexts. It was designed for institutional and educational leaders who are charged with developing and evaluating the efforts of their health care organizations to improve health care services to diverse populations. The workshop participants came from across the states including California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

Here are some comments about the workshop:

"Review at systems thinking in the context of the health care was great."

"The work process diagrams for medical systems will help me map out our existing process in order to understand opportunities for change."

"Lots of material in a short amount of time. Networking was especially helpful."

Addressing Health Disparities:
Faculty Development for Cultural Competency

In February 2003, The Network sponsored a training entitled, "Addressing Health Disparities: Faculty Development for Cultural Competency Education." This workshop was designed to prepare clinicians and clinical educators to teach the knowledge and communication skills needed for providing culturally competent health care. Participants came from across the states including California, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Texas.

Here are some comments about the workshop:

"I really found looking at evaluation, when worked in our small group to be very helpful. I came up with some creative ideas."

"The role play was quite effective. I enjoyed the discussion and the video."

Teaching Cultural Competence in Health Care

In December 2001, The Network hosted a training, "Teaching Cultural Competence in Health Care." This four-day workshop, developed by Melissa Welch, MD, MPH, was designed to introduce health care professionals to the fundamentals of designing and delivering a two- to eight-hour diversity training on valuing diversity and increasing cultural competence in the health care setting. Participants came from across the states including: California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

Here are some comments:

"The role plays were helpful in demonstrating what we have learned - good application."

"The opportunity to test and explore my own assumptions and stereotypes in a safe, accepting environment. From this I got a big "a-ha" that anyone can educate on diversity as long as they are self-aware and accepting/open to difference."

"I'm sure all aspects will be useful. As I begin to consider how to put together my own training, today gave me a glimpse of how that will be possible!"

Health and Illness:
Communicating Across Cultural Differences

In August 2001, The Network hosted a training, "Health and Illness: Communicating Across Cultural Differences. This training was directed toward health care professionals and was designed to help them provide culturally sensitive health care to an ethnically diverse population. Participants came from across the states including California, Idaho, Kentucky, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah and Washington.

Here are a few of their comments:

"Identifying models for eliciting patient beliefs and practices about illness was very helpful."

"The models of care, i.e., Kleinman's questions, LEARN and RESPECT are useful."

"I can't tell you how many times I have referred to the UCSF program and how great it was. I am using the info all of the time!"

Teaching Diversity and Cross -
Cultural Competence in Health Care

In February 2001, The Network sponsored a workshop for trainers entitled, "Teaching Diversity and Cross-Cultural Competence in Health Care.". This train-the-trainer program teaches the fundamentals of designing and facilitating two-to eight-hours of cultural competency for health care professionals. This program, limited to an audience of 25, attracted people from academia, health care systems and hospital and community-based clinics from around the country.

Here are some participants' comments following this four-day training:

"The trainer readiness and facilitation skills were extremely valuable."

"Experiencing several awareness raising exercises, was very helpful. Exercise can be used in large group meetings/staff meetings."

Health and Illness:
Communicating Across Cultures

In August 2000, the Network hosted a training, "Health and Illness: Communicating Across Cultures." This training is directed toward health care professionals and is designed to help them provide culturally sensitive health care to an ethnically diverse population.
