| Teaching
Cultural Competence in Health Care |
In December 2001, The Network hosted a training, "Teaching
Cultural Competence in Health Care." This four-day workshop,
developed by Melissa Welch, MD, MPH, was designed to introduce health
care professionals to the fundamentals of designing and delivering
a two- to eight-hour diversity training on valuing diversity and
increasing cultural competence in the health care setting. Participants
came from across the states including: California, Colorado, District
of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota,
New York, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
Here are some comments:
"The role plays were helpful in demonstrating
what we have learned - good application."
"The opportunity to test and explore
my own assumptions and stereotypes in a safe, accepting environment.
From this I got a big "a-ha" that anyone can educate on
diversity as long as they are self-aware and accepting/open to difference."
"I'm sure all aspects will be useful.
As I begin to consider how to put together my own training, today
gave me a glimpse of how that will be possible!"
