California Dental Access Project

An Initiative to Improve the Oral Health of California's Underserved

Recent research has shown that many Californians do not receive regular dental care. Oral diseases and other oral conditions - tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth loss-are among the most prevalent of all chronic health conditions. Federal and state policy makers have realized that access to dental services in California is an issue of increasing importance, particularly for uninsured, Medi-Cal and low income populations.

The Center for the Health Professions developed and completed The California Dental Access Project in response to a growing need for comprehensive information on access to care in the State. The project's goal was to examine the state of access to, and quality of, dental care in California. The final project report, "Improving Oral Health Care Delivery Systems in California" was released in December 2000. Staff developed the report with assistance from an expert advisory committee and through partnerships with multiple organizations involved in oral health.

This project was supported by the California HealthCare Foundation.
