Physician Leadership Program

In 1996, the Health Care Leadership Institute (HCLI) was founded by the UCSF Center for the Health Professions and the California Academy of Family Physicians to improve the leadership capabilities of physicians. The Institute addresses the critical need for physician leadership within academic health centers, managed care organizations, health care facilities, insurers and other health care entities. Its primary training product, the Physician Leadership Program (PLP), has "graduated" over 160 physicians nationwide.

PLP appeals to a wide range of physicians. Participants typically fall into one of the following groups :

  • Seasoned physician leaders who want a refresher course
  • Practicing physicians with increasing administrative responsibilities who have had little or no formal leadership training
  • Younger physicians starting practice who intend to enter leadership positions
  • Residency program directors and faculty
  • Physicians from academic settings
  • Physicians between positions or considering a professional change.
