The pace of change in health care is rapid in general, but perhaps no sector is experiencing evolution as quickly as pharmacy. The pharmacist of the future will require a comprehensive set of new skills to leverage these changes effectively to improve the health of the community.

To determine the challenges that confront the field of pharmacy, both now and in the future, and to identify the ways in which pharmacy leaders must respond to them, the UCSF School of Pharmacy and the UCSF Center for the Health Professions have partnered to create the UCSF Pharmacy Leadership Institute.

Program Goals
  • Develop a vision of a new role for the pharmacist in communities and institutional settings
  • Develop and offer training programs to advance the leadership and management skills of pharmacist in a manner consistent with that vision
  • Offer these programs to health systems, hospitals, and retail chains insurance carriers and others, first in California and later in the nation
  • Respond to specific requests from care systems, hospitals, retail chains and health plans to design and offer leadership development programs
  • Provide direct consultation with health systems seeking management and leadership improvement
  • Create a focus for advancing research on pharmacy leadership issues
  • Maintain a pharmacy resource center on leadership issues in pharmacy
