Field Of Research:

Infectious diseases - Microbiology

Research Interest:

Evasion of host immune recognition plays a key role in the establishment of systemic viral infection. Many viruses have evolved complex strategies for this evasion (one example being the down-regulation of cell surface MHC-I display). Such strategies are readily observable among the herpesviruses, a family of large DNA viruses that efficiently produce persistent infections and disease in their host. Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV; also called human herpesvirus 8) is a lymphotropic herpesvirus that is the etiologic agent of Kaposi’s sarcoma as well as of two AIDS-related lymphoproliferative syndromes. We are focusing our energy on understanding the molecular mechanisms of immune evasion employed by KSHV. This will improve our understanding of KSHV pathogenesis and provide insights into basic cellular and immunological processes
